We get a lot of requests for dethatching here at ProLawns, and we’re now happy to offer this service – but only in the fall! Here’s why timing is crucial when it comes to dethatching:
Spring Dethatching: A Recipe for Disaster?
While it might seem like a good idea to dethatch in spring when you’re getting your lawn ready for the growing season, it can actually do more harm than good. Here’s why:
- Stresses your lawn: Spring dethatching rips up the turf’s root system just before it enters its most stressful season – summer. This can leave your lawn vulnerable to heat, drought, and disease.
- Invites weeds: Dethatching brings weed seeds to the surface, creating the perfect opportunity for unwanted guests like crabgrass to take hold.
Fall Dethatching: A Healthier Choice
If your lawn has a significant thatch problem, fall is the time to address it. Dethatching in the fall allows your lawn to recover over the winter months and minimizes the risk of weed infestations.
However, there are other ways to deal with thatch that are more gentle on your lawn.:
- Core Aeration: This is our preferred method for managing thatch. Core aeration creates holes in the soil, improving air and moisture exchange, and allowing beneficial microbes to break down thatch naturally.
- Soil Improvement: Balancing your soil’s pH and adding organic matter can also help with thatch breakdown over time.
ProLawns offers both core aeration and soil improvement services as well! Contact us for a quote at Admin@ProLawnsMN.com
